Hand Picked Selections in California

With 75% of America's production, this massive state defines American wine. About 60% of the wine America drinks grows here. The reputation of California wine has soared. Only those unwilling to face reality can deny that the best California wines are as good as any in the world.

Though Southern France been the anchor of HPS for almost two decades, our California selections have always had a special place in the portfolio.

Travis Monterey Chardonnay has been in production since 1994, and even before this, the Travis label was used for Pinot Blanc and sparkling wines from California. For more than 15 years, Travis has delivered value and a true reflection of ripe, aromatic, cool-climate California Chardonnay. We are not objective, but can say it is one of the most distinctive California Chardonnays on the market. We like to think of it as one of the best.

Charles Underwood Farleigh Zinfandel is a far newer product for HPS. This great California grape does not of course originate in California. It is now conclusively proven to come originally from Italy, where it is known as Primativo. That is unless it comes from Croatia, where it is known as Plavac or maybe something else. Just as some varietals rarely if ever do well away from home, others blossom transplanted. Such is the case with Zinfandel. The maiden 2004 vintage of CUF was sourced from Amador and Mendocino, with the 2005 vintage from Sonoma and San Luis Obispo. As it is with the Travis Chardonnay, the objective is value and a pure, unmasked reflection of varietal character, which in this case means a bold, burly, briary red. We are thrilled with the results!
